Learn Rock Climbing Fundamentals At OAX

At Outdoor Adventure X Snowbasin Village, the professionally trained instructors of Weber State University’s (WSU) Outdoor Program will lead a Traditional (Trad) Climbing Clinic on the natural terrain of Snowbasin mountain, accessible via the Needles Gondola.

The Trad Climbing Clinic, like all OAX education activities, is included in the OAX ticket or camping pass. The clinic is open to all attendees who want to learn the fundamentals of climbing, led by top pro-WSU Outdoor Program instructors, Cage Vigil and Kylee Hoffman. Sign-ups will open in May.

Trad Climbing Skills: Placements, Anchors, Tactics

Have you always been intrigued by the traditional climbing protection hanging behind the counter at the gear store? Do you want to take your climbing into the mountains where you don’t have to follow a line of pre-drilled bolts to the anchor? Trad Skills clinic participants will learn about the different types of traditional protection available, when their use is appropriate, how to place them into the rock effectively, and how to build solid anchors. Necessary Equipment: Feel free to bring any cams, nuts, hexes, tricams, ballnuts, big-bros, bashies, or pitons that you have. They might not get used, but could add value to the discussion.

Necessary Equipment: All climbing equipment will be provided, however, feel free to bring any cams, nuts, hexes, tricams, ballnuts, big-bros, bashies, or pitons that you have if you’d like. They might not get used, but could add value to the discussion.

Meet Kylee Hoffman

Kylee Hoffman (any pronouns) is a certified Single Pitch Instructor through the AMGA. They have a love for people, the outdoors, teaching, and learning. Kylee has spent their whole life in and around the outdoors, whether that be mountain biking, hiking, paddling, camping, boating, or, their personal favorite, climbing. Kylee is currently finishing their final semester for their Bachelors in Acting/Directing and is excited to get to know and teach fellow outdoor enthusiasts this coming June.

Q: How were you introduced to the outdoors?
A: I grew up in a family that has always been active in the outdoors whether it’s rock climbing, canyoneering, hiking, boating, mountain biking, we wanted in.

Q: What is your favorite way to enjoy nature?

A: I love to spend time climbing, hiking, and biking with friends and family. It’s important to me to stop and take in my surroundings no matter what I’m doing.

Q: Do you have a go-to trail snack or camp meal?
A: My go to trail snack is jolly ranchers! It doesn’t matter what I’m doing, I always make sure I have some with me.

Q: If you had to pick one don’t-leave-home-without-it piece of kit, what would it be?
A: I never go anywhere in the backcountry without my comfort seasonings: lemon pepper and Tajin.

Meet Cage Vigil @cage_91

Cage is a local Utahn, born and raised in Ogden. He is currently a senior in the Mechanical Engineering program at WSU. While studying at WSU, Cage has pursued and acquired professional-level education and licensure in Rock Climbing, Splitboarding, and Whitewater Rafting. Inspired by the commitment and dedication of these communities, Cage gives back through instruction, education, and volunteering.

He loves to be outside, regardless of the conditions, activity, or setting, and sharing that passion with others is one of his favorite things. Cage is known for being restless. When he’s not studying, working, or training, he can be found spending time with his friends and his dog, outside.

How were you introduced to the outdoors?

After my friend’s older brother took me top rope climbing, I was hooked – and today, this is still how I spend the majority of my time outdoors.

What is your favorite way to enjoy nature?

My favorite way to recreate outdoors is rock climbing.

Do you have a go-to trail snack or camp meal?

My go-to trail snack is a Twix bar.

If you had to pick one don’t-leave-home-without-it piece of kit, what would it be?

I never leave home without a 1-liter Nalgene.
